About Volume Writing Workshops

Write & Respite in Hudson

Our director

Workshops are designed by Hallie Goodman, co-founder of the popular and long-running Volume Reading Series in Hudson. Recommended by The New York Times, Rural Intelligence and others, the series attracts standing room only crowds for writers like Jenny Offill, Gary Shteyngart, Samantha Hunt, Nick Flynn and many others.

A self-described workshop addict, Hallie has attended more retreats and seminars than she can count, taking notes all along the way.

“My goal is to design the kind of workshops I always wanted, but never quite found. I’ve chosen the most beautiful location, engaged the most inspiring instructors, and hired an incredible caterer—every detail has been thoughtfully considered. Attendees should be able to forget about everything—except making great work.”

Our Location

Getting here is easy and painless, with no guess work involved. Our workshops happen in the heart of bustling Warren Street, Hudson’s main fare. We’re a quick walk or $5 cab ride from the Amtrak station—and will pick you up in inclement weather. Driving? We’ll set you up with directions and parking tips.

Our little city is a rare gem—where you can feel away from it all, while being steps from hip restaurants, cool bars, and a beloved indie bookstore.

We’ve partnered with local studios to offer special discounts on yoga, pilates and barre classes for students who wish to maintain their practice during workshop breaks. And we’re happy to recommend hiking trails or swimming holes, depending on the season.

Room & Board

Workshop retreats include lodging in two beautifully-renovated historic buildings, owned and operated by Drop Forge & Tool. Most meals are catered by Black Eyed Susie’s Upstate along with other highly-lauded local partners.
